치매의날을 맞이하여...

치매에 대한 사회적 인식을 개선하고, 치매를 앓고 있는 분을 위로하며, 그 가족에게 용기를 드리기 위해서 노력하고 있습니다.

다시 한번 강조하고 싶은 말씀은 치매는 '뇌질환'이라는 것입니다. 노인이 되면 누구나 앓은 병이 아니라 일부 노인이 앓을 수도 있는 '뇌의 질환'입니다. 어떤 사람이 감기에 걸리면 감기환자가 되고, 혈압이 높으면 고혈압환자이듯이 치매는 일종의 '뇌의 질환'입니다.

치매는 알츠하이머병 뿐만 아니라 다양한 원인으로 생기는 질병입니다. 감기환자에게는 감기약이 있듯이, 치매에는 약이 있고, 발병원인에 따라서 완치되는 사람도 있습니다. 완치까지는 어렵더라도 증상이 완화되고, 조기에 발견하여 잘 관리하면 증상이 훨씬 덜한 상태로 지낼 수 있습니다. 따라서 조기 진단과 지속적인 관리가 중요합니다.

간혹 치매에 걸린 환자를 '바보'로 취급하는 경우가 있는데, 절대로 그렇게 해서는 안됩니다. 고혈압환자는 환자일 뿐이지 바보가 아니듯이, 치매도 환자일 뿐입니다. 치매환자는 최근 기억력이 나빠지는 경향이 있는데, 옛기억은 또렷합니다. 일시적으로 잃어버리는 경우가 있을 뿐 곧 정상으로 돌아옵니다. 상태가 심해질 수록 깜박 깜박하는 경향이 있습니다. 본인도 이러한 상황을 슬퍼하는데, 주변에서 바보취급을 하면 당사자는 얼마나 자존심이 상하겠습니까
